Attempted Jail Break In Calabar Prison Foiled By Men Of The Nigerian Prisons Service

An attempted jail break in Calabar prison, Cross River State, has been foiled by officers and men of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) with the support of the Army and Police Force.

The Controller General of Prisons, Dr. Peter Ekpendu, mni stated that but for the gallantry of the armed men on duty, the mass escape bid would have resulted in a monumental security disaster as over 500 out of the 638 awaiting trial prisoners at the time of the incident, are charged for capital offences such as armed robbery, murder, kidnapping etc.

He further stated that while the Prisons Service is devoted to humane treatment and correction of the inmates, his administration is committed to putting a stop to the wave jail breaks in the country, hence such attempts would never be tolerated.

Recounting the entire event has happened, DCP Enobore O. Francis, Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Prisons Service, National Headquarters, Abuja, said: "trouble started when on the 20th of February, 2015 at about 1100hrs, two cells housing some awaiting trial prisoners where opened, as a normal routine, for the inmates to take their bath. About four of them walked up to an escort staff to complain that they were tired of staying in the prison awaiting justice and wanted to be taken to court."

"The staff on duty appealed to them to exercise patience for courts to resume seating as they were currently on strike but this fell on deaf ears. Other prisoners soon joined in the agitation to be taken to court and in a spontaneous reaction, pounced on the staff, advanced through the Chief Warders office, destroying all the adjoining doors before gaining access to the gate lodge. They eventually broke into the armoury situated in the gate lodge and collected three riffles, went to the yard and started firing sporadically."

"Warning shots fired by armed men on guard duty outside the perimeter fence did not deter them. The prisoners rather went to the rear of the perimeter fence and fired several shots at the wall to weaken the blocks. Thereafter they used a concrete slab to hit open the weakened wall, making large hole through which they jumped out still firing at anything in sight."

"They were however engaged in a gun battle with the Armed Squad personnel assisted by the Army and Policemen and at the end, 8 of the prisoners died, 17 were injured, 4 staff were also injured with one of them having serious wounds. Others were arrested and returned to the yard. No prisoner escaped and all the riffles were recovered. The situation is now fully under control and normalcy has since returned to the yard."

VP Sambo Doling Out Millions Of Naira In Kaduna -SaharaReporters

Vice President Namadi Sambo, who arrived in Kaduna at the weekend, is presently supervising the sharing of millions of Naira to individuals and groups in the state with sole aim of ensuring that the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari loses to President Goodluck Jonathan, a credible source in the presidency has confirmed.

Kaduna is one of Buhari's strongholds along with Kano and the rest of the States of the North-west include Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Jigawa and Katsina.

The source added that Sambo in one of the meetings held with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates vowed that the party must do all it can to ensure President Jonathan wins the state that has been traditionally been Buhari's base since the 2003 presidential election.

He was quoted as saying it was critical for the PDP to use all the means at its disposal to win the election.

Among those receiving the largesse are traditional rulers, religious clerics and prominent youth leaders, saying it was being delivered to them with the condition they are to ensure Jonathan is elected. Sambo has also distributed exotic cars to some senior citizens of the state in what amounts to purchasing victory.

In the 2011 general elections, it will be recalled, Sambo lost to Buhari's defunct Congress for Progressive Congress all the elections held in his immediate polling unit and his Kaduna North local government area.

An Insider Within CAN Confirmed To Me That CAN Received N7Billion, Borno Pastor Insists

Borno State-based pastor, Kallamu Musa-Dikwa, has again maintained his position that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) received the sum of N7 Billion from President Jonathan to campaign against General Muhammadu Buhari.

This is coming against the backdrop of the President of the Association, Ayo Oritsejafor denying that CAN never collected any fund from the president.

Pastor Dikwa was the Associate Pastor with the E. Y. N. Church (Enklesiyan Yan'uwan A Nijeriya) Farm Centre, Dikwa Road, Maiduguri, Borno State, under Rev. Emmanuel Kwajihe between 2002-2004.

According to Pastor Dikwa, an insider within CAN confirmed to him exclusively that the body received the said N7 Billion from President Jonathan with the sole aim of campaigning against the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari.

He said, "There was no newspaper or news coverage of the disbursement of the N7bn to CAN. A national officer of CAN confirmed to me that CAN received the money and disbursed N3m to each state CAN.

"I sent text messages to the CAN leadership, asking them to repent otherwise I will expose them. Nobody replied me. That is why I decided to open up. Some people say that I am working for Buhari. It is not true. I am not working for anybody. It is not today that I started writing on Boko Haram. I stand for the truth. Boko Haram affects everyone, Christians and Muslims."

"I am not working for anybody. I am standing for the truth. I am standing for righteousness and for my people, whether Christians or Muslims.

He, again, reiterated that neither Incumbent President Jonathan nor his fierce challenger Muhammadu Buhari is worthy to be the next president of the country.

"I have always said that both President Goodluck Jonathan and Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd) are not good for Nigeria. I am praying and I am always telling the people that God will stop them (Jonathan and Buhari)."

Other persons also sustained injuries as a result of the tragic development, though exact figures are unclear.

Religious Crisis Looms In Delta State, As Commissioner Of Police Seals Catholic Church

A religious crisis is said to be currently brewing at the Delta State police command following what is being described as an 'ungodly' and 'forceful' barring of the Nigeria Police Force Catholic church within the premises of the state command by the state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Alkali Usman.

SaharaReporters learned from some of the church's parishioners that Usman, a Muslim, ordered the sealing of the Roman Catholic chapel, preventing worshippers who had converged at the church last week Sunday from entry. The faithful were then tear-gassed by policemen stationed at the premises by the commissioner of police; allegedly acting under strict directive from the commissioner.

The development has generated serious controversy between the commissioner, Usman and the parish priest of the police force's Catholic chaplaincy, Asaba, Rev Fr. Pius Onwuegbuzie (ASP).

"As we talk the life and job of our chaplain is seriously in danger and if anything should happen to him--if he is shot and killed either through accidental discharge--Deltans, Nigerians, and the entire world should know that the commissioner of police is responsible," a member of the church stated.

"There is a mosque and another church belonging to the Protestants, why is the CP sealing up the Catholic church?" the parishioner further queried. "Usman is trying to cause a serious religious crisis in the state if this issue is not properly handled."

"We got to the church as early as 6:00 a.m. for the early morning mass but to our surprise we saw that the gate was locked and police officers ordering the worshippers to stay away from the church premises. We shall not be intimidated. Is it because Usman is a Muslim?" another church member asked.

"The former Police Commissioner, Ikechukwu Aduba, approved the place for the building of the church and worship. We are going to resist and take up the matter with the Police Commissioner,'' another worshipper stated.
Another parishioner, who identified himself as Peter, confided in SaharaReporters that the CP was only witch-hunting worshippers of the chapel.

Echoing this, a policewoman, named Sarah, said it was unjust for the CP to close down the chapel when there is a mosque and a Protestant chapel operating within the premises of the command.

"This is a pure case of witch-hunting and injustice against the Catholic faith. Why [is] the Catholic chapel now a problem?" Sarah questioned.

When contacted, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Celestina Kalu, confirmed the story, saying that the place is no longer one of worship. Kalu stressed that the command has barred Christians from worshipping there as it was approved in error.

"The CP had asked the chaplain to stop further work on the building and also stop holding regular masses there because there is no approval for the building of the chapel from the Police Works department," Kalu said.

"Unlike the Catholic chapel, the mosque and Protestant chapel were provided in the master plan of the command premises. The CP did not destroy the chapel, but only ordered the closure of every activity there, pending official approval from the Force Works Department." Kalu explained

Meanwhile, a document obtained by SaharaReporters shows that approval was actually given for the building of the Roman Catholic Church at the police command, against its denial of such consent.

The document, which was released by the church committee of the chaplaincy, buttressed their claim that the chaplain applied for the building on June 5th, 2012, and subsequently got approval from the state police command for the building of the chapel.

The approval which was signed by then CP, Ikechukwu Aduba, with police signal number, AW: 0108/DTS/VL.1/2 and DTO: 291000/6/2012, gave the chaplaincy the permission to build the chapel in the command.
According to the Secretary of the church committee, Stanley Nweke, on receipt of the approval, the site for the building was inspected and allocated to the chaplaincy by the officer-in-charge of works, who is a deputy commissioner of police.

"The chapel building site was inspected and allocated by the police command through the deputy commissioner of police, who is in charge of works on the instruction of the CP, Ikechukwu Aduba," Nweke said.

"But regrettably, after two years of work on the building, CP Aduba, shortly before his retirement, ordered the chaplaincy to stop further work on the building." Nweke stated.

Nweke produced a letter written by the chaplaincy to the police command in which the chaplain, Onwuegbuzie, recalled his last meeting with CP Aduba over the building of the chapel. "Few months before the retirement of CP Aduba, he invited me to his office and said to me, 'I have called you to tell you that I am not happy with you,' Onwuegbuzie wrote.

'I approved land for you to build a small church, but you went ahead to build a big church. I want to tell you that I made the approval in error and I will write officially to stop you from continuing the church project,' Aduba reportedly furthered.

However, investigation by SaharaReporters has shown that before Aduba retired, there was no official letter from the command stopping the continued construction of the church building as claimed.

At press time, SaharaReporters learned that State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan and other religious leaders have stepped into the matter, with a view to find a lasting solution.

Prophet Jeremiah Of Mercy TV Donates N2million to fire victims in Warri

The General Overseer of Christ Mercy Land Deliverance Ministry, Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin, at the weekend donated N2million to the victims of the Warri Navy Mammy Market that was gutted by fire last week.

Addressing the traders during an on-the-spot assessment of the damage and to commiserate with the victims, Fufeyin condoled with all those who lost property to the fire and encouraged them not to lose hope but to remain steadfast in God.

The prophet said: "At a time like this, it is easy for the devil to tempt someone with all sort of temptation but keeping hope in God is the surest way to overcoming whatever pain associated with this kind of lost".

Fufeyin claimed in retrospect that some of his earlier pronouncements, televised through the Mercy TV, that people should be careful to avoid fire accident like this and thanked God for sparing the lives of the traders.

He promised to do more for the people in conjunction with the Mercy TV partners and urged the people to use the money judiciously.

New Leaked Documents Reveal Nigerian Army Board Of Inquiry Tried Capt. Koli For Exposing Ekiti Rigging

New documents exclusively leaked to SaharaReporters authoritatively confirm that Brigadier General A.A. Momoh, the Commander of the 32nd Artillery Brigade, convened a Board of Inquiry (BOI) to investigate Captain Sagir Koli, the conscientious whistle-blower who exposed the 2014 plan by which the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rigged the Ekiti gubernatorial contest.

Koli discretely audio-taped a meeting between army officers and politicians on June 20 in Akure in the implementation of the plan, which returned Ayodele Fayose.

General Momoh was the senior army officer who allegedly acted on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff in the rigging plan. At least two of the politicians involved claimed on the tape to have been acting on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The new documents show that Brig. General Momoh convened the panel, in his words, "to investigate the circumstance that led Capt. SI Koli (N/12074) to abscond from his place of duty on 1 Aug 14 and still remain absent while deployed for security duty during the 2014 Osun State Gubernatorial Election."

The BOI had six members, led by Col. D. Akama as chairman. General Momoh said it would sit at a date and time "to be determined by the president," but it was not clear whether that meant President Jonathan, or what president he was referring to.

The panel called nine witnesses, including three from the 32nd Artillery Brigade, Captain Koli's regiment. Copies of the findings and opinions were not part of the leaked documents, but were to be completed and submitted on August 14, 2014.

It has since emerged that Brig. General Momoh, at about the time that he convened the BOI, also authorized the illegal abduction and torture of Capt. Koli's 15-year old younger brother, Adamu Koli.

In retaliation against his brother, the teenage Adamu was illegally detained, tortured, starved, and chained to a bed in the military hospital at Adekunle Fajuyi's Cantonment in Ado-Ekiti.

Capt. Koli told SaharaReporters in an exclusive Live interview on SaharaTV last Saturday that Brig. General Momoh's objective of abducting and torturing the teenage Adamu was to lure him out of hiding. The captain has been in hiding since he first leaked the recordings.

SaharaReporters first released secret audio recordings, a sworn affidavit, and transcripts of the detailed plan to rig the election. Other key participants in the plan, and at the election-eve meeting in Akure, were: Senator Iyiola Omisore; the Minister for Police Affairs, Jelili Adesiyan; Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, who was at the time the Minister of State for Defence; and a man identified as Honourable Abdulkareem, who claimed to be a member of the National Assembly.

Capt. Koli, as one of the subordinates to Brig. General Momoh, accompanied the General to the meeting, during which the politicians bullied and ordered him around. They bribed him with a huge stash of cash and prospects of promotion if he made the election manipulation successful. Among others, he was to clamp down and arrest members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as well as grant privileges to members of the PDP involved in the rigging plan.

Capt. Koli's audio recording revealed that Obanikoro was directed to attend the meeting on special assignment by President Jonathan, who wanted to make sure that the Ekiti race ended in a PDP victory. It also revealed, and other statements by Capt. Koli confirmed, that the Ekiti race was to be the blueprint for electoral manipulation in the Osun State gubernatorial contest that was to follow in 2014, and later for the 2015 general elections. It was in the course of that Osun State plan that General Momoh set up the BOI.

SaharaReporters has repeatedly contacted the presidency, as well as spokespersons for the army for reaction to our story, but they have yet to respond to our inquiries.

SaharaReporters has authoritatively learned that in order to stymie further discussions and stories relating to the exposed Ekiti rigging saga, President Jonathan has secretly funnelled bribes to several editors, as well as radio and television station chiefs.

Observers say it is curious that neither the presidency nor any of the security authorities has taken up the Ekiti rigging situation with the outrage it deserves.

Meanwhile, one of the main culprits, former ambassador to Ghana Obanikoro, has been bragging about filing defamation lawsuits against a number of reporters and newspaper concerns, ostensibly to intimidate them. He is also quietly bribing members of the Nigerian Senate to approve his re-nomination by President Jonathan as Minister of state for Defense.

SaharaReporters, which broke the story, has certainly not been served.

Oba of Benin is alive, Benin Traditional council Says - PUNCH

The Oba of Benin, Oba Erediauwa, has debunked speculations which went viral on Friday morning, that he has passed on.

The rumour of the demise of the Oba was further fuelled by his inability to personally receive President Goodluck Jonathan, during his February 4 presidential rally in Benin, the Edo State capital.

According to punchng.com, "the Benin Traditional Council, told our correspondent on Friday evening that it was a mere speculation, which had been on for over six months and lacked truth."

The Secretary to the council, Mr. Frank Irabor, explained that it was the responsibility of the council to issue a formal statement, if such a development did occur.

He said, "They have been peddling that rumour for more than a year now, because the Oba has not been coming out.

"If there is anything like that, there is usually a statement from the palace or from the Benin Traditional Council."

"The fact that he has not been coming out, even when the President came last week, does not mean that there is anything like that."

"I don't bother about rumours. I believe in getting information from the authentic source. For more than six months, they have been carrying the rumour," he added.

Just IN: Popular Uselu Market In Benin City Gutted By Fire

A section of the Popular Uselu market located along Ugbowo road in ‎Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, was razed down by fire on Monday evening.

The fire, reported to have started at about 8:30pm, gutted a minimum of 50 shops although no life was reported to be lost.

When our correspondent got to the scene of the incident, there was a billow from the charred remains of the burnt goods.

While some of the affected traders struggled to salvage what was left of their wares, many others were seen bemoaning the level of damage done to goods worth millions of Naira.

One of the traders, Mr. Chidera Nwakeze, explained, "I came to the market around 8.30pm and discovered that it was on fire. But before I could get to my shops, they had already been consumed with all my goods."

However, few others insinuated and alleged that the fire outbreak was a conspiracy towards the Igbo traders in the market.

"I don't think that the fire was caused by any electrical fault because the section which got burnt has been out of electricity supply, a female trader said.

"Someone must have set fire on this area of the market because it is dominated by Igbo people," she added.

According to punchng.com, the council chairman, Mr. Victor Enobakhare, described the incident as an act of sabotage by persons who were against the reconstruction of the market, also known as Edaiken Market.

While urging the victims to remain calm, he however, announced a donation of one million Naira to serve as a palliative to cushion the effect of the damage and promised to notify the state government on further action.

The Sokoto State Government security outfit, Sokoto Marshals Corps, on Friday said it had prosecuted more than 100 motorcyclists for violating traffic rules in Sokoto city and its environs in the last two months, The PUNCH reports.

The Commandant of the outfit, ACP Sa’idu Madawaki, disclosed this at a news conference in Sokoto when he reviewed the outfit’s activities since it took off in November 2014.  He said the accused motorcyclists were prosecuted and convicted to various jail terms, adding that most of them were arrested for violating traffic lights, routes violation and related offences.

He noted that “some of them were also arrested for assaulting our personnel operating along the various roundabouts and inter- sections in the city.”

According to the PUNCH, the commandant promised that officers of the corps would continue to work diligently to further sanitise the roads.  Madawaki commended the level of cooperation between the outfit and other security agencies in the state.

According to him, the corps has 2,300 personnel deployed to all the 23 local governments of the state.  He said “the 2,300 personnel are categorised into traffic, security and environmental marshals.

“These officers were given rigorous military training before their deployment in a bid to further secure the lives and property of Sokoto residents.”

108 Christmas babies born in Gauteng

More than 100 babies were born in Gauteng by Christmas afternoon, the provincial health department said on Thursday.

Spokesperson Prince Hamnca said a total of 108 babies were born in the province. Mamelodi Hospital and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital each delivered 14 babies, while Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital and Kalafong Hospital delivered 11 each.

In KwaZulu-Natal 65 babies were born at government hospitals, Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo said.

"We are delighted, of course, to welcome these new lives on Christmas Day, which is a very special day, as we all know."

He expressed concern that five of the mothers were teenagers.

"I did speak to them... If you are a 17 year-old, and you are delivering a child weighing 3.8kg, chances of delivering safely are slim.

"It actually places your own life and the baby's in danger, and it is something that all of us as society need to begin to talk about and discourage."

He said young people should be encouraged to abstain from sex, or practice safe sex at all times.

In Limpopo 53 babies were born.

The first baby, a girl, was delivered at Donald Frazer hospital, followed by a boy at Mankweng Hospital.

"These babies were all born healthy, their mothers are well and in high spirits," said spokesperson Macks Lesufi.

Statistics from the other six provinces were not
immediately available.

Al-Shabab Militants 'Bomb' African Union Base

Al-Shabab militants have launched an attack on the main African Union military base near Mogadishu airport in Somalia.

Explosions and gunfire could be heard in the vicinity, AU spokesman Col Ali Houmed told AFP.

Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack and says its fighters are inside the base.
The African Union has over 20,000 troops in the country to help the weak government battle al-Shabab.

Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, al-Shabab's military spokesman, said that fighters had breached the compound's defences.

"Our fighters have entered AU's Halane base by force through the gate and now fighting is going on inside the base," he said.

According to the BBC, the AU base is on the edge of the compound of Mogadishu's international airport.

The base also hosts the British and Italian embassies and is used as the headquarters for United Nations operations in Somalia.

Aleem Siddique, a UN spokesman in Somalia, told Reuters news agency that all UN staff were safe.

Earlier in December, at least six people were killed when al-Shabab attacked a UN convoy near the airport.

Various armed groups have been battling for control of Somalia since the overthrow of President Siad Barre in 1991.

South Africa President Jacob Zuma Hint At Marrying Fifth Wife

South Africa's President Jacob Zuma has hinted he may be ready to take a fifth wife to accompany him through old age, the daily newspaper The Star said on Wednesday.

During a visit to a Durban township on Tuesday in KwaZulu-Natal, the 72-year-old said in Zulu "Angakayakhi indlu yokugugela... laba ngisabathathile nje" (I do have wives but I'm yet to marry my last one).

The crowd, most of them elderly, laughed and cheered, The Star said.

Zuma, who on Sunday said he was in "perfect condition" after a stay in hospital in June, had earlier given a speech about the need to respect and tend for older people.

Sihawu Nguyen, a professor at KwaZulu-Natal University, was quoted by the newspaper as saying it was fairly standard among Zulu people for a man who practises polygamy to take a last wife for his last years, sometimes
the younger sister of one of his wives.

"They call the last wife 'indlu yokugugela' [the home in which I will age in] because the responsibility of looking after the husband in their old age predominantly lies with the junior wife, who is often younger than the other wives and more agile in case there is an emergency," he said.

Zuma, who has around 20 children, has married six times but currently has four wives on the state's budget, despite criticism from some tax-payers.
