Ekiti Jailbreak: As Usual, Federal Government Sets Up Probe Panel

The Federal Government has set up a panel of
inquiry to uncover those behind the attack on the federal prison, on Afao-Ekiti Road, Ado-Ekiti where some inmates were set free.

Minister of Interior, Comrade Patrick Abba Moro made this revelation yesterday during the commissioning of 12 convenience rooms built by United Bank For Africa, UBA, for Ikoyi Passport office of the Nigeria Immigration Service.

The minister confirmed that 274 out of the 320 prisoners who escaped are still at large while 46 have been recaptured by security agencies.

The minister said he would not pin down the attack on any group till investigation was concluded.

"At the moment I don't want to attribute the occurrence in Ado Ekiti prison to some conspiracy theory or attack by insurgents. We will get to the root of these attacks through a
multi-sectional investigative panel put in place to find out the culpability or otherwise of those suspected to be involved and when we are through we will appropriately inform the Nigeria public"

He praised the Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, especially Ikoyi Passport office headed by Deputy Comptroller Of Immigration, DCI, Modupe Anyalechi for adequately keying into the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan, especially in the area of attracting the private sectors to partner with government to deliver service to Nigerians.

"I recommend this attitude to other formations of the Nigerian service. I can tell you that the restructuring and repositioning of Nigeria is on course and hopefully with the cooperation of all and sundry the Nigerian Immigration Service will soon become a new immigration service for a new Nigeria."

Another PDP In The Making? Four die as thugs clash during APC primaries

Like a war scene, continuous gun report tore through the air in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos State on Tuesday afternoon. As residents ran helter-skelter in the ensuing confusion, four youths were shot dead, while several others were wounded, as 20 vehicles were also vandalised on four streets, namely Kano, Ondo, Odunfa and Ibadan.

Our correspondent gathered that the crisis was the aftermath of a primary election conducted for two candidates of the All Progressives Congress ─ Oladele Adekanye (Lado) and Bashiru Oloto.

The two men were aspiring to get the APC ticket to represent the Lagos Mainland Constituency one in the 2015 elections. Our correspondent learnt that the primary was won by Lado, a former council chairman. PUNCH Metro gathered that immediately the results were announced, more than 100 hoodlums from Apapa Road, who wielded guns, among other weapons, trooped into the streets to create mayhem.

Red Meat Causes Diabetes, And It Takes Three Days To Digest, Food Experts Reveal

id you know that it takes three days for meat to digest in the stomach? I am sure many lovers of the delicacy are not aware of the effect that red meat consumption may have on their digestive system.

Yet, food experts say it is not only your digestive system that suffers when you eat meat regularly, as many do in these climes where a meal without it is seen as a poor diet.

Consultant cardiologist, Dr. James Adetayo, says many do not know that eating meat regularly, which he says can be as much as three times a week, can predispose them to heart disease, a condition that is responsible for the highest mortality in the world.

Adetayo notes that red meats such as beef, pork and lamb have more cholesterol and saturated fats than what you can find in white meats such as chicken and fish.

The danger that lies in eating red meat as often as people do these days, according to the experts, is that the cholesterol levels in meat raise fatty acids levels in the body, thus provoking heart disease.

Anger As Lagos State University VC Celebrates Three Years In Office

it is not a cultism-related problem, it is the students kicking against the hike in tuition or protesting their exclusion from examinations. In fact, agitation seems to be a recurring decimal in the 30-year-old institution.

But this time, those at the helms of the affairs in the university believe it is in the news for the right cause. Reason: the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa, only last Wednesday, celebrated his 1,095 days in office. The celebration was not without pomp and ceremony and the VC did not miss that opportunity to present a scorecard of his administration to the public.

The Visitor to the university and Governor of Lagos, Babatunde Fashola, appointed Obafunwa as the VC three years ago.

Obafunwa's introductory remarks at the elaborate ceremony that started at the institution's new auditorium and ended with a cocktail at the VC's Quadrangle captured the essence of the gathering.

Stop Training Our Soldiers; We Need Weapons Not Training, FG Tells US

The United States has announced the cancellation of the training of a battalion of the Nigeria Army, at the request of the Federal Government.

It said that the first two phases of the training were conducted between April and August, 2014, noting that it had provided untrained civilian personnel with basic soldiering skills.

A statement from the Information Office of the US Embassy in Abuja, on Monday, regretted what it described as the premature termination of the exercise programme, which it said would have trained the Nigerian soldiers to build their capacity to counter the Boko Haram terrorists.

Thumbs Up: Gowon Showers Encomium On NNPC Over Its Role In Revenue Generating

A Former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) has commended the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for living up to expectation of generating revenue for the development of Nigerian economy.

The elder statesman who recently turned 80 spoke over the weekend in Abuja at an event organized in his honour to induct him into the Living Legends Hall of Fame, explained that the Nigerian National Oil Company (as the Corporation was known at inception) was established by his administration after the civil war to help generate revenue for the government from the oil and gas sector.

"Certainly, the NNPC has done very well and it should be appreciated as the leading organization that generates most of the money for the government," General Gowon stated.
