The 7 ‘C’s Of Challenges Facing African Businesses By HamidBouchikhi

The Capitalism 3.0 challenge

The welcome enthusiasm for CSR policies and practices in Africa must not shadow the fact that the primary purpose of a business is to create wealth, i.e. making a profit. There simply can be no responsible company with no viable economic model.

To address the huge needs of African populations, companies must seek wealth creation and, along the way, create jobs, generate tax revenue, and distribute purchasing power. If profit is essential to effective contribution of the common good, we need to agree on what kind of profit we are talking about.

Summarizing the history of capitalism with a very broad brush, we can say that 1.0 version is characterized by the pursuit of wild-profit, with no care neither for law nor morality. Capitalism 2.0 pursues legal profit and the 3.0 version emphasizes legitimate profit.

While many African enterprises in the formal sector have, I think, or at least I hope, made the transition to legal capitalism, they still have a long way to go to meet the challenges of socially legitimate capitalism.

In capitalism 3.0, the legitimacy of profit depends, upstream, on how it is made and, downstream, on how it is used. Profit is legitimate if it is achieved without doing harm to people and nature. Downstream, profit is legitimate if a significant share of it is reinvested in the development of the ecosystem that made it possible. To illustrate the difference between legal and legitimate profit, the distribution of 100% of profits to shareholders is legal, but less and less socially legitimate.

The establishment of policies and CSR practices in African companies must facilitate the transition to a virtuous capitalism 3.0 which contributes to the common good, in addition to enriching its shareholders.

But, what are the 7 'Cs'? Please, Continue reading here...http://talkafrica.co/ng/p/7078/

Victory For Tambuwal: PDP Loses Bid To Unseat Him

Efforts by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remove the Speaker, House of Reps, Aminu Tambuwal, through an exparte application failed as the Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by Justice Ahmed Mohammed ordered the party to put the Speaker on notice.

The court refused the party's request for an ex parte order to compel Tambuwal to vacate his seat as Speaker of the House of Representatives following his defection from the majority party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, The PDP has filed a counter suit, seeking permission to move against Speaker. The PDP had through its counsel, Mike
Ahamba (SAN), who argued the application said Tambuwal had lost his seat by virtue of his defection, according to the provisions of Section 68 of the 1999 Constitution.

The party cited the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Reps as respondents in the motion. It urged the court to order Tambuwal to give effect to the provisions of....

Make Sure Your Votes Count IN 2015 Or You Will Be Slaves Again - Buhari

Retired General Buhari has asked Nigerians to make sure their votes count during the 2015 general elections.

Buhari spoke at a reception organised for him at the APC secretariat in Enugu State on Saturday evening, where he observed that soldiers engaged in the campaign against terrorism and insurgency had complained of inadequate weapons, despite the huge security budget, as well as lack of effective leadership.

"Vote and make sure that your votes count," Buhari told the gathering, including leaders and members of the APC state chapter as well as national delegates from the state.

He urged eligible voters to obtain the permanent voter card, which he described as the "ammunition" to rout the.....

President Jonathan Must Be Impeached: 63 Anti-Jonathan Senators Meet Today

The 63 senators who had signed up to remove President Goodluck Jonathan will meet on Monday (today) evening to perfect their strategy for making it a reality.

One of the coordinators of the impeachment plan, who made this known to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday, said the agenda of the meeting would centre on how to handle the case on the floor of the Senate. But the senator, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, did not disclose the venue of the meeting for security reasons.

He said, "All of us will meet tomorrow (Monday) evening to discuss when we are going to move the motion on the floor of the Senate. We have an appreciable number already and I believe that more people will join when they see the
seriousness with which we are going about it.

"Some of our colleagues were saying that we don't have the will to move it (impeachment motion) on the floor. We will soon execute our plans because it is in the best interest of all Nigerians"

The Power To End Insurgency Lies In My Hand, Vote Me For President - Buhari

A former Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Mohammadu
Buhari (retd.), has promised to end insurgency and other forms of insecurity in the country, if elected President under the platform of the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 general elections.

The pledge is coming amidst rising insurgency by the Boko Haram Islamic sect in the North-East and especially the Friday's attack on Kano Central Mosque. He also denied sharing money to delegates during his recent visit to Imo State during his nationwide tour to meet the APC delegates.

The Head (Media, Publicity and ICT) in Buhari Support Organisation, Dr. Chidia Maduekwe, stated this in his weekly brief on "GMB meet the party delegates nationwide tour," read to journalists on Friday in Abuja.

"At no time did GMB, all through this meet the delegates tour, share money or lobby any delegate with money. As we all know, a leopard can never change its spot. Friends and sympathisers may have privately encouraged their colleagues to attend the delegates' meeting, certainly not GMB directing or approving any monetary exchange, as being falsely reported by some online media," he stated. In his nationwide tour to meet delegates, Buhari had visited Abia, Bayelsa, Imo, Delta, Cross River and Rivers states,
where Governor Rotimi Amaechi described him as a committed and focused leader whose watchword was integrity.

Maduekwe said, (continue reading)... http://talkafrica.co/ng/p/6916/

Boko Haram: America Not Nigeria’s Friend, Says Gowon

A former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has taken a swipe at the United States on its refusal to sell arms to Nigeria to fight the insurgency by the Islamic group, Boko Haram.

Gowon, in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, criticised the US for not selling military hardware to Nigeria, saying if the US was truly a diplomatic friend to Nigeria, it should do everything possible to keep the corporate existence of Nigeria.

This, according to him, includes assisting Nigeria to fight aggression from any quarter.

The US had on November 12, 2014, defended its refusal to sell cobra helicopters to Nigeria, saying the Federal Government was free to buy fighter jets from any other country.

The State Department's spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said, "Nigeria has purchased helicopters that originated in countries other than the US and nothing in our decision prevents Nigeria from obtaining weapons and equipment from other sources,"

Psaki had reacted to the allegation by the Nigerian Ambassador to the US, Prof. Adebowale Adefuye, that Washington declined to sell arms to Nigeria.

Adefuye had told members of the Council on Foreign Relations on November 10 that Washington was not doing enough to assist Nigeria in combating the Boko Haram insurgency in North-East geopolitical zone of the country.

He said, "The U.S. government has up till today refused to grant Nigeria's request to purchase lethal equipment that would have brought down the terrorists within a short time on the basis of the allegations that Nigeria's defence forces have been violating human rights of Boko Haram suspects when captured or arrested.

"We find it difficult to understand how and why, in spite of the U.S. presence in Nigeria, with their sophisticated military technology, Boko Haram should be expanding and becoming more deadly."

But Psaki had stated that the US refused to sell the helicopters to Nigeria due to concerns about the ability of the military to use and maintain them.

The cobra is a combat aircraft with the ability to climb at the rate of 8.2metres per second. It is equipped with a 20 mm M197 3-barrelled Gatling cannon in the A/A49E-7 turret (750 rounds ammo capacity).

The spokeswoman also said there were ongoing concerns about Nigerian military's protection of civilians when conducting military operations, adding that these had been discussed with the Nigerian authorities.

Gowon, while speaking to one of our correspondents, however, alleged that the US did same to the Nigerian government during the Civil War, when...(Read more)http://talkafrica.co/ng/p/6810/

Yeye Olufunke Daniel: Gbenga Daniel’s Priceless Jewel At 51

"Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. She openeth her mouth with wisdom and in her tongue is the law of kindness. Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also praiseth her…" - Proverbs.

Chief (Mrs.) Olufunke Daniel, wife of former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has been described variously as kind hearted, fashionable, resourceful, intelligent and very beautiful. For her, greatness, nobility and personage are a perfect mix.  She is indeed an exemplar of the ideal wife and an archetypal mother.

Born into the family Pa Samuel Ajibola Opawole and (Mrs.) Ibironke Opawole (Nee Osoba) on 27 November, 1963, she began to show, early in life, unmistakably signs of a woman destined to live in the dormitory of the kings. She demonstrates unequalled diligence at whatever she has to do and this quality did not only stand her out among her peers, it equally distinguished her in her academic career.

Yeye, as she is fondly called, had her post primary education at the Baptist High School, Iwo where she yielded to the discipline and the scripturally sound Baptist education which further moulded her vision of life and sharpen her mission of human existence. Etching her nibble footprints in the sands of time, the school authorities were quick to notice her leadership qualities as she was made the School's games and athletic prefect in her final year. The Daniel's love for sports still continues  till date as manifested in the array of 'keep-fit" gadgets available at the swimming pool side of their residence.

For someone who believes in the might of education, she enrolled at the school of Basic Sciences at the Ogun State Polytechnic now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic in Abeokuta for her Advanced levels course and later proceeded to the nation's premier University, the University of Ibadan where she graduated in flying colours with a Bachelors of Science degree in Agricultural Biology. At the University, the school authorities acknowledged her exemplary qualities and made her the Health Minister of Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1985.

After graduating from the 'great UI.', she served her fatherland through the mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps programme. She thereafter worked with Lever Brothers (Nigeria) Limited and, after years of meritorious service, decided to go into private business. She then established Laurel Fashion, a high-riding outfit of which she is currently the Chief Executive Officer. Yeye also designs what her husband, OGD, wears. Hear her: '…I've always loved fashion. I design what I wear and what my husband wears too. I do all the designs in my shop..." Although fashionable by all standards, Chief (Mrs) Daniel has perfected the strategy of being fashionable in a non-gaudy and simple way - she loves good cloths and dressing well but she prefers wearing pearls and beads rather than gold.

Yeye Olufunke is personification of humility, a feature sometimes missing in some other women of achievements.  As attested to by friends, staffers and domestic workers, they unanimously agreed that she is a paragon of virtue, unobtrusive and accommodating.

As an exemplar of the ideal wife and quintessential mother, little wonder that she loves her family most devotedly and passionately. "…My husband is my best friend and I love to be with my kids always…" she said during in an interview. For her,  being a housewife has been very wonderful as it gave her the ample opportunities to take care of his husband and cater for the children. Despite the fact that there were good cooks at the government house during his husband's reign as the governor, Yeye still finds her way to the kitchen which she revealed in an interview: "Let me point out clearly that there are still some delicacies he would want me to prepare for him.  For example, he will never allow anybody to prepare his 'Ikokore' (Water yam porridge) and 'Efo riro' (Vegetable soup). So, I still go to kitchen to prepare his meal!"

Like Mama H.I.D. Awolowo, she accompanied OGD on his campaign efforts prior to 2003 election in Ogun State. Together, they visited all the 236 wards in Ogun State as she coordinated all the women groups in the PDP. While in Office as the First Lady between 2003 and 2011, she touched the lives of many people most especially Ogun State indigenes through the activities of the Gateway Front Foundation - a socio-economic programme aimed at alleviating poverty in the society. The activities of the Gateway Front Foundation includes Micro-credit schemes, Free Medical Services, distribution of educational materials and trade empowerment tools and support for the physically challenged.

She is the matron of Webic Choir and holder of a number of chieftaincy titles among which is the Yeye Fesojoye of Ile Ife, Yeye Fehintade of Omu Ijebu, Yeye Obalofin of Ijebuland, Yeye Asoludero of Makun, Sagamu, Suada of Ifo, Yeye Atunluse of Ogbere and Yeye Akogun of Okun Owa.
At her leisure, she enjoys watching TV and ruminating on how to improve on whatever she does.
